Learn To Be Green
How much can you save by turning off those pc's?
Our DNA Network Analysis service offering (DNA®) benchmark information revealed an interesting detail that led us to conclude the following:
"If you introduce (and enforce) a company policy to turn off computers after office hours, you will save thousands of dollars."
Watch how this example illustrates the cost savings:
This example customer (real undisclosed customer with slightly modified figures and data to guarantee anonymity) has about 25,000 active users. A quick analysis with DNA shows how many hours per day users spend online, details how long they use Lotus Notes/Domino, and reveals the type of user:

- Blue users are visible online less than 2 hours per day. These remote users (e.g., sales agents) work using local replicas on their PCs.
- Green users are normal office users, who are online in the office up to 10-11 hours per working day.
- Users in the red area leave their desktop switched on all day and night (1,374 users for this customer).

If each desktop consumes 150 watts of power, these users waste over 10,000 kilowatt per week (not including necessary heating and air-conditioning).
Turning off those computers could result in a cost saving on the energy bill of more than US$ 50,000 per year.
